The United Way wants to make sure people are getting their prescriptions during the recession.
In the past year and a half, United Way Thomas Jefferson Area has given out more than $1.5 million in prescription medication in our area. It is all part of its RxRelief Program.
Joining forces with Virginia Health Care Foundation and Martha Jefferson Hospital, the program has helped 400 people without prescription coverage get the drugs they need to stay healthy. The United Way says it is prepared to help more people.
"We know there are people that are having to make hard choices between paying the rent or the mortgage, paying utility costs, paying for food and perhaps going without medications," said Jon Nafziger of the United Way. "And for anybody that's in that situation, we really encourage them to call."
Individuals making up to $20,400 and a family of four making up to $40,000 can qualify for the program if they do not currently have prescription drug coverage.
