January is National Mentoring Month.

Mentor. Tutor. Pass it on! This month is National Mentoring Month and the United Way’s Volunteer Center is once again teaming up with the Youth Mentoring project group from last year’s Leadership Charlottesville class. All this month our media partners, NBC29, Monticello Media Radio Stations (NewsTalk WCHV 1260 Am and 94.1 FM, Sports Radio 1400, Country WCYK, Hot 101.9Tom@107.5 and Generations 102.3) and The Daily Progress will be running ads creating awareness of the tremendous impact mentors and tutors can have on a child’s life.

We are especially happy to welcome our business sponsor, MichieHamlett, Attorneys at Law, our neighbors just down the street on Court Square. They have embraced our efforts to recruit mentors and tutors for the many wonderful programs in our community.

To that end, we asked Bryan Slaughter, one of their attorneys, to help us record a new radio PSA. We always have fun recording with Kerry James, Afternoon Dude at Tom@107.5. Take a listen to the end result.

This month-long effort culminates in a Mentor & Tutor Opportunity Fair at the Omni Hotel (another wonderful, generous sponsor) on January 28 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm with 14 local programs who need volunteers to work with kids. Last year’s event netted several new volunteers for these programs, and they were all happy to come back and do it again! We have added two new programs as well. If you can't attend the event, check out the list of participating agencies.

Check out the event flyer for more details. If schools are closed due to snow on January 28, the snow date is February 4. Thank you Omni Hotel!

RSVP for the event or invite others to attend using our Facebook Event Page.

Remember, you can be a Super Hero to a kid when you become a mentor or tutor.

Mentor. Tutor. Pass it on!
