The impact that a mentor has on a youth can be profound. In today’s youth environment we often hear complaints of “there is nothing to do.” Boredom and too much time can lead to trouble for many youth. This is where a mentor has their largest impact. A mentor’s main role is to support, guide, and redirect some of these behaviors that are so prevalent in today’s society.
Some of the things that our Youth Companions provide include getting the child out of the house and away from the TV and video games. Showing these youth that there is so much more to do than they think opens up the opportunity to learn and grow as well as form their contribution to their community.
Because many of our mentors are college students, the Youth are able to see what “success” looks like, and it becomes more of a real, attainable image instead of a broad concept. Our mentors set an example of what a successful and young adult can look like. More often than not, this comes in the form of a positive image beyond what they receive in school and in their neighborhoods.
