The All Around Town Auction is underway! Charlottesville Newsplex shot a news story with us this morning at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports. Store manager John Holden was gracious in his on-air comments about the United Way, and his auction display was wonderful! There is a big table as soon as you walk in the door with all the items in his day hiking package – (2 day packs, 2 pairs of trail shoes, 2 headlamps, a hiking guide book, 1 compass) plus he was so enthusiastic about the concept that he added four tickets to the Banff Mountain Film Festival at UVA. There are already a few bids on the package.
Several of us fanned out across the area on Friday to drop off the signs and bid sheets, and in doing so got to preview many of the items up for bid. That is what makes this event so neat – the merchants who are supporting us also benefit from more people coming through their doors. In addition, they are all listed in the half page ad in The Hook (this week’s will have the final, current list since several were added after the print deadline last week) as well as on our website. And our wonderful media sponsors, Charlottesville Newsplex and the Charlottesville Radio Group have also been running ads promoting the auction.
I had a blast talking about the auction on the WINA morning show last Friday with Jane Foy and Jay James. Jane could not wait to begin visiting the businesses to start placing her bids. We teased Jay that he should check out the Elle MacPherson Intimates Boudoir Baby Doll & French Knickers at Derriere de Soie because we wanted to know what French Knickers are!
Items range from a 9 x 12 Oriental design area rug valued at $650 from Floors are Us, to Ben & Jerry’s donation of one pint of ice cream a month for a year! Hebblethwaite Jewelry, Reines Jewelers and Tuel Jewelers are each offering beautiful, unique items valued over $400. If you have never visited Greenwood Gourmet Grocery (Just off Crozet Exit 107 on Rt. 64, heading west on 250) you will be delighted to meander through the unique store with both food and home decorating items after you place your bid on their gift basket.
There are many, many more businesses participating in the All Around Town Auction – just click on the link to find the complete list. Please remember to Bid. Buy. Better your community. Winning bidders will be notified on Feb. 13 – just in time for Valentine’s Day!
