Before last week, I had never done a radio interview before, and now I can say I’ve done two! My good friend Shaele and I were on a mission to inform the community of the tremendous need for holiday volunteers and donations this year, and we chose the radio as our battleground.
On Thursday morning I arrived at the Joe Thomas Show on WCHV, and felt as though I was visiting my long lost uncle when Joe greeted me with a warm hug. Shaele and I sat with Joe for half an hour and openly discussed the harsh reality of the current economy and the effect it is having on our community. The deadlines for asking for holiday assistance had past, but now came the challenging part: to get those with the means to reach out a hand and lift someone up this holiday season. We talked about the great work our good friends at Love INC are doing with holiday meal baskets, and how people could ‘adopt’ a family for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. We noted the different ways people could donate toys through the Salvation Army and Toy Lift. And, as our Volunteer Center Director, Shaele offered countless ways people could volunteer their time this season by wrapping presents, decorating a nursing home, boxing holiday meals, and much more!
Then, Friday morning, we were graciously invited on 1070 WINA to talk with Jane Foy and Jay James on the morning news program. Enthusiastically, Jane and Jay discussed with us the same opportunities to help, and came up with great ideas of their own.
Even though I have to admit I was excited to be on the air and couldn’t wait to email my parents the podcasts, I was just honored to spend time on local radio shows and discuss such an important subject this year. I only hope we were able to encourage one more donation, inspire one more volunteer, and make this a happy holiday season for one more family in need.
