A Great Way to Help Charlottesville Area Nonprofits

Every day, nonprofits in our community fulfill their missions operating on shoe string budgets. Some have ongoing needs for tangible items such as copy paper, toiletries, books or playground balls. Others have one-time needs for larger items such as refrigerators or furniture.

A group of participants from the Chamber of Commerce‚Äôs Leadership Charlottesville program is partnering with the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area and coordinating an annual United Way Day of Sharing beginning this year on April 24.  This will complement the United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring held each September, which yields over $300,000 of community service work for local non-profits.

Day of Sharing logo concept1The goal is to find and give thousands of dollars of material goods to local nonprofits and public schools. The Day of Sharing team is creating an online database of wish list items needed by area nonprofits and public schools. Businesses, individuals and groups will have the opportunity to select wish list items to donate, such as soccer balls, copy paper, desks, bookshelves and swingsets. Potential donors will be able to visit the website and decide what items they can donate or raise funds to purchase for local organizations.

The United Way Day of Sharing will culminate in a large, public, family-friendly event on Wednesday April 24, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pen Park, where individuals and business donors can present their gifts to local non-profits.

Working on this project has been exciting, rewarding, and fulfilling. Our Leadership Charlottesville group has had the amazing opportunity to partner with the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area and work with Jessica Snyder, United Way Volunteer Center Director on the project, who has made the process easy and hassle-free.

Along with this wonderful partnership, we as a group are helping local for-profits and individuals who have things to donate and helping local nonprofits who could benefit from the goods. What a great win/win! And partnering with the United Way makes all of us extremely hopeful that the Day of Sharing will soon be as well-known as the Day of Caring!

The Wish Lists will be posted on Friday, March 15. Please check www.cvillevolunteer.org for more information.
