Nonprofits & Schools: Do You Have a Project?

Each year as we plan the United Way Day of Caring, we struggle with a problem that seems unique to our community and always amazes me: we have more volunteers than we have projects. That’s right- we have more volunteers register each year than we have slots available in the projects that are submitted. Which is why we need your help!

The deadline to register a team or submit a project is next Friday, June 28th. Our volunteer numbers are on pace to hit above 2,000 again this year and we need more projects! Please take a moment to see how you can help us have enough projects to offer our volunteers:

  • If you volunteer or work for a nonprofit or public school, check with someone to see if they’ve registered a project. If not, suggest some project ideas.
  • Check out our Project Development Toolkit for ideas on what you could submit and how to prepare a successful project.
  • Remember that our volunteers have many different skills and interests! We have volunteers who want to work in a pair on a computer/filing project, volunteers who want to work directly with people, and just about everything in between!
  • Be creative in naming your volunteer project.
  • Be as specific as possible in the description and be sure to include whether the supplies will be provided or if volunteers will need to bring supplies.
  • Plan a way for volunteers to get to know your agency on the day of the event. For instance, provide a tour of your office space, plan a lunch with volunteers and staff, have Board members drop by to say thank you, and be sure to get their contact information for thank you notes! You never know if you may have a future donor, long-term volunteers, or potential board member in your group!
